Everlasting Style

In January 2010, Rankin travelled to South Africa to explore the country’s photographic traditions, where he was inspired by some of South Africa’s greatest living photographers. Rankin’s photographs of his journey capture the colour and vitality of South Africa as it proudly steps into the new decade.
Oxfam – We Are Congo

On his return visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, in late 2009, Rankin met the people of this war torn country. “I work in a shallow, throwaway world. I found that the people there are just like you and me. They just want to get on with their lives.”

Tormented by civil war, an estimated five million people have died in the DRC since 1998. Among the devastation, Rankin found amazing stories of love, loss and bravery.
Oxfam Congo – Chaka Kidogo

In 2008 Rankin travelled to the Mugunga camp in eastern Congo to meet some of the 17,000 people who had taken refuge there. “Out of all the conflict zones Oxfam were involved in, the Congo seemed to be the one getting the least media attention and the one that was the worst place a civilian could live.”

These images show the resilience of the people who live in the midst of one of world’s deadliest civil wars and the hope they have for future peace.
Commissioned by Tourism Australia in 2005, Rankin was asked to shoot a series of photographs that showed the country in a provocative new light for British audiences.

Refraining from taking predictable postcard frames, Rankin shot everyday Australia. From landscape shots including the corner shop captured in the ghostly early morning and a rather jolly-looking surf team.
